When the seasons change, you might find yourself wanting some change in your life as well. A great way to kickstart spring is to take part in some spring cleaning of your living space to clear your head and space in preparation for a new season. While spring cleaning isn’t necessarily the most fun option for figuring out how to spend your downtime, it will definitely be worth it when your home looks as fresh as when you moved in – making it all the more easier to use the space to make new memories in for the coming months.

Clear out the trash

One of the things that can make your living space look much more messier than it actually is, is having your living space filled up with unnecessary junk. It can come in various forms, depending on how “clean” your space is. Empty bottles, cans, or takeout containers could have been settled onto tables or shoved to the back of your fridge at one point or another. Old homework assignments or handouts can have found their way under your bed or crammed into the folds of your couch cushions. It could even be belongings that you have thrown around the house that don’t belong in the space they are in – hair ties strewn around the living room, articles of clothing around the living room, or dishes left out in your bedroom. Regardless of the reason, make sure things that don’t necessarily function in space are thrown out.

It might be overwhelming to look at all the trash in your apartment as a whole, but break your home into spaces and designate bins or bags for what you consider trash, donate-worthy, or belongings you want to keep, but aren’t in the right place right now. Recycle old, clean bottles and worksheets, toss out food containers, donate clothes you haven’t worn in months, or throw random socks you haven’t seen in months into your laundry basket for future use.

When spring cleaning, it’s important to dispose of your waste responsibly. If something can be donated because it’s still ready to be used – donate it to a local shelter or charity. If something can be recycled, make sure it isn’t soiled and throw it into the recycling bin instead of your usual trash bag. If you are throwing out an old TV set or wiring that doesn’t work anymore, make sure you look at how the items are to be disposed of as they usually need to be taken to a separate disposal. There are plenty of donation centers, churches, or schools that should provide local e-waste drop-off events.

Invest in some organization pieces

When spring cleaning, it’s much easier to see how clutter can take over your home in such a short time. It can be due to being a little more on the messy side, but it can also be blamed on the lack of storage you may have in your current living space. Don’t let your spring cleaning efforts go to waste by not tackling the issues you already know your space has – instead, try to invest in organization pieces that will make your daily life much more efficient and future cleaning much easier when everything has a designated space.

If you already know that one of the reasons that your space is so messy is that all your study materials are taking over because you don’t have enough space for them – invest in organization that would help you tackle the problem. Get a larger desk equipped with more shelving or drawers that will help you organize books and school supplies, or get a separate bookshelf where you can store all your textbooks efficiently in one place.

If having too many clothes is the reason why your space is so messy, get a dresser that allows you hold even more clothes so that they aren’t thrown around your home. If you need clothes to be hung up, get a clothing rack that can double as decor when you color code the items you store on it.

Rearrange your furniture - or get some new pieces

Once the junk is cleared and your items are organized, end your spring cleaning by looking at your clean home to figure out how you can rearrange your furniture to make it work more for you.

If you’ve noticed that you entertain a lot of guests on a weekly basis, mirror your living room to enable you to do so. This may be rearranging the placement of your TV so that more people can watch it from certain angles, or investing in more seating in order to host large amounts of people in the future.

If you and your roommates spend a lot of time eating on your living floor or your bedroom desks, try asking for everyone to pitch in to rent or buy a dining table set so that food and dishware isn’t moved past the kitchen or dining room – further eliminating the risk for future messes or a pest problem.

It might not be the first on the list of things you want to do when you are free, spring cleaning is essential for resetting your home from the previous months and preparing you to tackle the rest of the school year with a clean space.
